Donzaleigh Abernathy Biography

Mrs. Juanita Jones and Reverend Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, who founded a nonviolent social movement with their closest friend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., were the parents of Donzaleigh Abernathy, who was born in the heart of the American Civil Rights Movement. Abernathy's in-depth knowledge and participation in all of the main Civil Rights Marches, as well as seeing crucial choices that shaped American laws and society, give her a significant voice in today's debates on race and equality. Abernathy had the distinction of introducing Rosa Parks at the 45th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott Banquet, which was one of her last public appearances. She also presented Coretta Scott King and Dawn Steele, the Women's Federation for World Peace's first female President of a Motion Picture Studio. The American Library Association named Abernathy's debut book, Partners to History, Martin Luther King, Ralph David Abernathy, and the Civil Rights Movement, one of the "Best Books for Young Adults" in 2004. Her screenplay, based on a passage in her novel, was later created by Emory University's Brave New Works Project, in which she starred. Abernathy featured in Lifetime Television's critically acclaimed series Any Day Now for four years, portraying a character ranging in age from thirty to seventy. Her recurrent appearances on The Walking Dead, Lincoln Heights, Dangerous Minds, House, 24, and Amazing Grace may be familiar to television viewers. Abernathy played the leading lady alongside Golden Globe winner Ving Rhames in the HBO film Don King- Only in America, which won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award. She also appeared in HBO's Miss Evers Boys, which won Emmys and Golden Globes, alongside Emmy winner Alfre Woodward, and NBC's The Tempest, starring Academy Award winner Peter Fonda. Murder in Mississippi, which won the Directors Guild of America Award, featured her as a starring actress. For her efforts as an actress and writer, she earned the Tanne Foundation Award in 2012. Abernathy also received praise from Roger Ebert for her role as "Martha-the slave" in Ron Maxwell's Civil War epic, Gods and Generals, directed by Warner Bros. She has been on CNN, FOX Morning Show (NY), and Politically Incorrect, among other radio and talk shows. She has worked as an environmentalist, for the Centers for Disease Control HIV/AIDS Awareness Program, Amnesty International, Artists for a New South Africa, and as a Founding Trustees for the New Visions Foundation and the former Vice President of the Board of New Roads Schools of Santa Monica, in addition to her acting career.
