Coleman Peterson Biography

Acknowledged as American’s top people person, Coleman Peterson worked as the Executive Vice President of People for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., where he also stood out serving as the Chief Human Resource Officer of one of the world’s largest private workforce with a total of 1.5 million associates worldwide. He serves on two corporate boards known as JB Hunt Transport Company and Build-a-Bear Workshop as President/CEO of Hollis Enterprises and he chairs the compensation committees of both companies. Walmart a retailing corporation was named by Fortune magazine as “America’s #1 Most Admired Company” and with a $345 billion a year in revenue, Peterson introduced his strategy “Get, Keep, Grow” to help build the people and Walmart culture using the three elements of getting, keeping and growing associates. To find various highly motivated people to carry out Walmart’s business strategies around the globe was his main goal. He helped in expanding the workforce at Walmart and now it has become the country’s number one employer of Hispanics and African-Americans with a population larger than many cities in the US. Peterson engages in speaking events and consults as a way to get involved in the community outside of his board work. He was appointed by the Governor of Arkansas to the Board of the Northwest Arkansas Community College in 2004 and he’s still in service as an elected member. He is a member of the National Council of La Raza and life member of Kappa Alpha Psi and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities. Within the human resource industry, he received the highest recognition when he was inducted as a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Human Resources Excellence by Linkage Incorporated and he is also a beneficiary of the Society for Human Resource Management’s Award for Professional Excellence. He was voted by the Chancellor and Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas Fayetteville and honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2007.
