About Annette Gordon-Reed

Annette Gordon-Reed Biography

Annette Gordon-Reed, a renowned author and educator, holds positions as a Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University and the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard Law School. Her award-winning body of work encompasses six books, with her latest publication, "On Juneteenth," delving into the crucial significance of the holiday in American history. She expresses disappointment that there is no official commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. In her previous article, "Growing Up with Juneteenth," published in The New Yorker, she reflects on the development of the Texas holiday into a nationwide tradition, as well as the discrepancies between the legal definition of "freedom" and its practical application in the lives of Black Americans. "On Juneteenth" is a more personal account that combines memoir and history, exploring the oppression and violence that preceded and followed the celebration and its ongoing relevance in the quest for equality. Gordon-Reed's previous works include "The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family," which won the Pulitzer Prize in History and the National Book Award for nonfiction, as well as "Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy" and "Most Blessed of the Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination." The latter presents a challenging evaluation of Thomas Jefferson's character and counters traditional portrayals of him in history. In 2022, she was set to release "A Jefferson Reader on Race." Her accolades include the National Humanities Medal awarded by President Barack Obama, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacArthur Fellowship, election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and membership in the Academy's Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2019, she was elected a Member of the American Philosophical Society.
