Most recently, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander S. Vindman (U.S. Army, Ret.) served as the National Security Council's director for European affairs. Prior to his retirement from the US Army, he worked as a political and military affairs officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff as well as a foreign area officer with postings at the US embassies in Kyiv, Ukraine, and Moscow, Russia. Given his three years in Russia, daily interaction with Russian military officials, and access to their defense and security apparatus, his thoughts are particularly fascinating.
