Empowerment Experiment CEO Maggie Anderson understands the modern experience associated with being black in America. She shared a great deal about the work she has done over the last decade as the keynote speaker at Northwestern University's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration.
Anderson said that she has applied Dr. King's message of uniting economic justice and empowerment when helping support black-owned businesses. She talked about ways that people could take positive action, mainly by supporting those businesses a little more.
The event was attended by around 70 people at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. There were several musical performances in addition to Anderson's presentation.
In the 2009 Empowerment Experiment, the Anderson family solely supported African American businesses for the year. The family was inspired by the election of President Barack Obama.
Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management researched the data that was collected and they found several positive effects that it had on the black community. Anderson also talked about the experience in the book, "Our Black Year: One Family's Quest to Buy Black in America's Racially Divided Economy."
Anderson has also been active in supporting the political campaigns of several prominent black politicians. She previously served as an executive at McDonald's.
