Civil rights activist and former school administrator DeRay Mckesson has been named the keynote speaker for the inaugural Global Engagement Summit at Northwestern on Thursday, April 13. At the event, he is expected to talk about Campaign Zero, an organization that works to bring awareness to and find strategies to combat police violence. Tickets to get into the event are free of charge and can be picked up at the Norris front desk starting in early April. In addition to that, those who may attend include Northwestern students as well as international and domestic delegates who work with the summit. The Baltimore, Maryland native became an organizer during his teen years when he had the role of Chairman of Youth As Resources, which is one of the city’s youth-led grant-making organization. He ended up attending Bowdoin College from where he graduated in 2007 with a degree in government and legal studies. Over the last few years he has worked for Teach for America, the Baltimore City Public Schools, Harlem’s Children’s Zone and as a human resources official at Minneapolis Public Schools. He is most known for being a part of the Black Lives Matter group and for running for Mayor of Baltimore in February 2016. Mckesson will be speaking on April 13th at the Global Engagement Summit that is open to Northwestern students and summit members and delegates.
