American broadcast journalist and scientist Zoey Tur is well known for creating one of the first contemporary news helicopters that were utilized for live news reporting. The first transgender reporter to appear on national television was Tur. Together with fellow reporter and ex-wife Marika Gerrard, Los Angeles News Service was founded by Tur, a broadcast reporter who later became a commercial pilot with 10,000 hours of flight time. Their news service was the first to broadcast a high-speed police chase and the first to use an AStar helicopter to cover live breaking news in a major city. Her coverage of the attack on Reginald Denny during the L.A. Riots on April 29, 1992, and her discovery and broadcasting of O.J. Simpson's infamous slow-speed chase in 1994 were both significant. Together, Tur and his ex-wife Marika Gerrard won three Television News Emmy Awards, two Edward R. Murrow Awards for broadcast excellence (for their coverage of the Loma Prieta/San Francisco Earthquake and a feature on American Jews emigrating to Israel during a war), an Associated Press National Breaking News Award, the NPPA Humanitarian Award, several Golden Mike Awards, as well as numerous other regional and local honors.
