Russian businessman, venture capitalist, and philanthropist Yuri Milner changed venture capital investing practices in the 2010s with his inventive investment methods and foresight into the economic possibilities of the Internet. In Moscow, Milner grew up in a Jewish family. About 50 books on American corporate management methods were written or published by his father, a university professor. His mother worked as a doctor. Teenage Milner studied computer programming at night. He pursued a Ph.D. in particle physics after receiving a B.A./B.S. in theoretical physics from Moscow State University in 1985. He found success selling personal computers while still a graduate student on the grey (quasi-legal) market and, with the help of his father, gave up physics in 1990 to pursue M.B.A. studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He continued to work for three years in the World Bank's financial sector unit despite not finishing that degree. Milner sought a position in the growing post-Soviet Russia's capitalist economy upon his return to Moscow in the mid-1990s, beginning by working for influential tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky's Alliance-Menatep brokerage business. Milner and other investors acquired a macaroni producer in 1998, and they turned it into a hugely prosperous business. The next year, Milner cofounded NetBridge, a venture capital firm, and he started making investments in Russian internet businesses.
