Yoni Appelbaum is an American historian, journalist, and deputy executive editor at The Atlantic, where he oversees the Ideas section. Raised in Newton, Massachusetts, in a Jewish family, he graduated from the Maimonides School, earned an A.B. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in history from Brandeis University. Before joining The Atlantic, he taught history and literature at Harvard, Babson College, and Brandeis. His academic work focused on the Gilded Age and associative republicanism. Appelbaum’s journalism includes a notable 2019 Atlantic article advocating for Trump’s impeachment, which shifted mainstream media discourse.
