Yeardley Smith Biography

She was born in Paris, and in 1966, she relocated to Washington, D.C., with her family. Smith experienced voice-related bullying when she was younger. She graduated from theatre school in 1982 and started working as a professional actor. In 1984, she relocated to New York City and made her Broadway debut in The Real Thing. The Legend of Billie Jean and Maximum Overdrive followed her feature debut in 1985's Heaven Help Us. In 1986, she relocated to Los Angeles, California, and was given a recurring part in Brothers. She gave an audition for a part in a run of Simpson family-themed animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. Smith wanted to try out for the part of Bart Simpson, but the casting director thought her voice was too high; as a result, Lisa was given to her. On The Tracey Ullman Show, she provided the voice of Lisa for three seasons. In 1989, the shorts were turned into The Simpsons, a half-hour show of its own. Smith won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance in 1992 for her performance as the character.
