Xernona Clayton Biography

The Trumpet Awards are created and executive produced by Xernona Clayton, who is also the Foundation's founder, president, and CEO. The Trumpet Awards are a distinguished ceremony that honors the efforts and achievements of African Americans. The Trumpet Awards were the first broadcast in 1993 by Turner Broadcasting, and since then they have been broadcast to more than 185 nations worldwide. In 1967, Ms. Clayton started her television career and became the first Black woman to host her own program in the South. The Atlanta CBS affiliate WAGA-TV featured the Xernona Clayton show on a regular basis. For almost 30 years, Xernona Clayton worked as a corporate officer for Turner Broadcasting. At Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., Xernona Clayton was named Corporate Vice President for Urban Affairs in 1988. In this role, she oversaw internal and external initiatives for the Corporation and acted as a liaison between civic organizations in Atlanta and around the nation and Turner Broadcasting (TBS SuperStation, CNN, Headline News, TNT, Atlanta Braves, and Atlanta Hawks). Ms. Clayton was one of the highest-ranking female corporate executives of Turner Broadcasting System. In order to work closely with the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Xernona relocated to Atlanta in 1965 and accepted a position with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Along with Mrs. Coretta Scott King on her worldwide musical tours, Ms. Clayton also traveled extensively. Dedicated to advancing racial harmony, Xernona Clayton has long been a pioneer in civic initiatives and civil rights initiatives. She oversaw the work of Black doctors in Atlanta in an initiative known as the Doctors' Committee for Implementation in 1966, which led to the integration of all hospitals in Atlanta. This initiative got a national distinction from the National Medical Association for its significance and acted as a model and pilot for other states around the nation. When the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan renounced the Klan in 1968 and credited Xernona with his conversion, her ongoing battle against the dragons of prejudice and bigotry became more evident than ever. The several hours Ms. Clayton devotes to fostering intercultural understanding through bi-racial organizations show how committed she is to the community. Xernona has won various media honors and received numerous accolades for her humanitarian work. Several editions of several highly remarkable biographical works contain her.
