Xavier Jennings Biography

The youngest of five children raised by a single mother, Xavier Jennings, 21, was from East Denver. He started peddling narcotics at the age of 13, joined a gang, and was engaged in the criminal justice system. At age 17, he left school. At the age of 18, he discovered YouthBuild at Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC), where he has worked ever since. After successfully earning his GED and graduating from YouthBuild in December 2008, Xavier was given the 2009 Denver Metro Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award. He is a program specialist for MHYC's YouthBuild program and is currently enrolled at the Community College of Denver. He facilitates leadership classes and oversees service projects for program participants, including a mentoring program for middle school students. He just became a parent and instructs football and basketball in a local minor league. His career aspirations include teaching physical education or founding a youth nonprofit. Getting promoted to staff at Mile High Youth Corps and meeting President Obama, a vocal member of the V.O.I.C.E.S. Council, are two other highlights.
