William W. George Biography

Former chairman and CEO of Medtronic, Bill George is a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School where he has been teaching leadership since 2004. He has written four bestsellers, including Authentic Leadership. Finding Your True North: A Personal Guide; True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership; and Seven Lessons for Leading in Crisis His most recent book, True North Groups: A Powerful Path to Personal and Leadership Development, was released in September 2011. Authentic Leadership Development, an Executive Education program at HBS, is currently chaired by Professor George. He started working for Medtronic in 1989 as president and COO. From 1991 to 2001, he served as CEO. From 1996 to 2002, he served as board chairman. He served in the American Department of Defense earlier in his career and had leadership positions with Honeywell and Litton Industries. Mr. George has served on the boards of Novartis and Target in addition to his present roles as a director for ExxonMobil and Goldman Sachs. He now serves as a trustee for the Guthrie Theater, the World Economic Forum USA, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has held the position of chair of the boards for Advamed, United Way of the Greater Twin Cities, Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, and Allina Health System.
