About William Langewiesche
William Langewiesche Biography
William Langewiesche is an American novelist and journalist who spent many years as a commercial airline pilot. He's been the foreign reporter for Vanity Fair magazine since 2006. Langewiesche is the magazine Vanity Fair's foreign reporter, a post he has held since 2006. He was formerly the national correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, where he was nominated for eight National Magazine Awards in a row. Shipbreaking, wine criticism, the Space Shuttle Columbia accident, current maritime piracy, nuclear proliferation, and the World Trade Center cleanup are just a few of the themes he's written about. Langewiesche grew raised in Princeton, New Jersey, and went to Stanford University in California for college, where he earned a degree in cultural anthropology. He spent a lot of his time doing various occupations that required him to fly airplanes, a talent he had learned as a result of his family's past. Langewiesche began to work as a writer for Flying, a large-circulation journal for general aviation pilots, after graduating from college. He prepared technical studies on the flying characteristics of numerous airplanes, as well as profiles of individuals, while he was there. He left his work in his mid-twenties to write three books: one nonfiction and two novels, none of which were published. He continued to travel and write while flying airplanes to support himself. Langewiesche traveled to the most distant areas of the Sahara desert and sub-Saharan West Africa as a result of his journeys. In 1991, this was the topic of a cover story in The Atlantic Monthly, as well as a book called Sahara Unveiled. Langewiesche was dispatched all over the world by the Atlantic, increasingly into combat zones. Langewiesche left The Atlantic in 2006 to work for Vanity Fair while residing in Baghdad to chronicle the Iraq war. Langewiesche was the only journalist allowed complete, unfettered access to the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 attacks. He spent over six months there, writing American Ground, a serialized article for The Atlantic Monthly. American Ground was a nationwide bestseller book according to the New York Times. The dispute involving Chevron Corporation and Steven R. Donziger was the subject of Langewiesche's 2007 essay Jungle Law.
