William K. Reilly Biography

Senior adviser WILLIAM K. REILLY works for the global investment partnership TPG Capital, LP. He was a founding partner of Aqua International Partners (1998–2010), a private equity firm with a focus on investing in businesses in the water sector, during his time at TPG. Reilly was the first Payne Visiting Professor at Stanford University (1993–1994); administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency (1989–1993); president of the World Wildlife Fund (1985–1989); the Conservation Foundation (1973–1989); the Rockefeller Task Force on Land Use and Urban Growth (1972–1973); and a senior staffer of the President's Council on Environmental Quality (1972–1973). He was one of the seven founding trustees that oversaw the management of San Francisco's Presidio National Park and served as the leader of the US delegation to the UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. His appointment to the President's Global Development Council in late 2012 followed his appointment by President Obama to co-chair the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling in May 2010. Reilly serves as chairman emeritus of the boards of the World Wildlife Fund, the ClimateWorks Foundation, and the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University. He also serves as chairman of the advisory board for these organizations. He has served on the National Geographic Society, ConocoPhillips, and DuPont boards. He also co-chaired the Bipartisan Policy Center's energy project. He is now on the executive committee of the US Water Partnership, the board of Royal Caribbean International, and the boards of Energy Future Holdings, where he chairs the sustainable energy advisory board. He also serves as co-chair of the Global Water Challenge. The William K. Reilly Endowment for Environmental Leadership was established by American University in Washington, DC, to honor his contributions to the field. Reilly was chosen to join the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007. He has a BA from Yale, a JD from Harvard, and an MS in urban planning from Columbia University. He served in the US Army until the rank of captain. Together with his wife Elizabeth, he resides in San Francisco.
