William Foege Biography

In the 1970s, epidemiologist William H. Foege was credited with leading the successful battle to eliminate smallpox. Dr. Foege was named Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1977 after becoming Chief of the Smallpox Eradication Program. In 1984, he and a group of colleagues founded the Task Force for Child Survival, a collaboration between the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank, the UN Development Program, and the Rockefeller Foundation. In 1986, he became Executive Director and Fellow for Health Policy at The Carter Center. He quit in 1992 but remained a Task Force Fellow and Executive Director. He was named Presidential Distinguished Professor of International Health at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health in 1997. Dr. Foege joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as Senior Medical Advisor in 1999. He left the Gates Foundation in December 2011 and currently works as an Emeritus Professor of Global Health at Emory University. Dr. Foege graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine and Harvard University School of Public Health with a Master's in Public Health. Dr. Foege served on the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize jury in the past.
