Wes Jackson Biography

Wes Jackson established and served as chair of one of the first ecological research programs in the country at California State University-Sacramento after earning a BA in science from Kansas Wesleyan University, an MA in plant science from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. in hereditary qualities from North Carolina State University. Jackson made the decision to quit academia at that moment and return to Kansas, where in 1976 he founded the non-profit organization The Land Institute. Up until he left in 2016, he presided over The Land Institute. The group describes advancing Natural Systems Agriculture as its main goal, and it also disseminates The Land Report, a brochure about American practical agribusiness and agrarianism. The Land Institute looked at options for adapting innovation ecological morality and education, but in the end, a research program in controllable farming became crucial to its mission. Jackson first advocated for the development of a resilient polyculture in 1978. He made an effort to have fields planted in polycultures, or fields with several plants, much as in nature. Jackson also needed to use perennials that wouldn't need to be replanted every year. This would leave the soil more perfect, preventing disintegration and allowing important connections between soil and plant to continue. The Land Institute works to cultivate non-farming plants into productive producers of long-lasting grains under intercropping circumstances. Jackson said that this type of horticulture used nature as a model and that The Land Institute had taken the grassland environment into consideration in order to achieve that goal.
