About Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson Biography

Wesley Wales "Wes" Anderson, an American filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and producer of movies, shorts, and commercials, was born on May 1, 1969. For The Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox, he received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay in 2001 and Best Animated Feature in 2009, respectively. Similar aesthetics are used throughout his works, with meticulous, purposeful cinematography, and a focus on basic colors. Folk and early rock music, especially classic British rock, are included in his soundtracks. In his movies, Anderson combines wry humor with moving depictions of imperfect people, frequently a mix of the rich and the working class. He is renowned for working on several projects with the same cast and crew. The Moonrise Kingdom, a highly regarded film by Anderson, launched at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Houston, Texas, welcomed Wesley Wales Anderson into the world on May 1st, 1969. His mother, Texas Anderson, was an archaeologist who subsequently worked as a real estate agent, and his father, Melver Anderson, owned an advertising and public relations firm. Eric and Mel, Anderson's older brothers, were also divorced when he was eight years old, as were their parents. The divorce, according to Anderson, was "the most significant event in my brothers' and my growing up." He got the idea for The Royal Tenenbaums' plot from this circumstance. The young Anderson produced a lot of Super 8 films with himself, his siblings, and other actors in them. He attended Westchester High School as well as St. John's School, a Houston-based independent school that was portrayed in Wes Anderson's movie Rushmore. Wes Anderson attended the University of Texas in Austin after graduating from St. John's. There, he met Owen Wilson, who went on to serve as both Anderson's creative collaborator and a key cast member in his films. Anderson and Wilson became housemates after meeting in a playwriting workshop. Then they began writing the script for the feature-length film Bottle Rocket. In 1991, Anderson received his B.A. in philosophy, and in 1992, the short film adaptation of Bottle Rocket was released. The 1996 crime caper Bottle Rocket, directed by Wes, starred a group of young Texans who wanted to pull off big heists. Despite the movie's poor box office performance, it received high marks from critics, with Martin Scorsese listing Bottle Rocket as one of his favorite 1990s movies. Rushmore, a quirky comedy about a high school student's obsession on an elementary school teacher, was Anderson's follow-up movie. It was made on a grander scale and received positive reviews upon its release. Its popularity aided in both Anderson's career start and Bill Murray's rise to fame as an independent film actor. Since then, Murray has made an appearance in all of Anderson's movies. In a 2000 piece on Anderson in Esquire magazine, director Martin Scorsese lauded Bottle Rocket and Rushmore. Anderson's next comedy-drama, The Royal Tenenbaums, about a prominent creative New York City family and its shunned father, was his most commercially successful work to date. The movie received more than $50 million in domestic box office revenue, received an Academy Award nomination, and was named the 159th best movie of all time in an Empire survey. A classic example of Anderson's style is his next film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, starring Bill Murray as a Jacques Cousteau-like documentary filmmaker. However, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou received less positive reviews from critics than Anderson's previous works, and its box office performance lagged behind that of The Royal Tenenbaums. Following The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou's underwhelming box office and critical reaction in September 2006, Steely Dan's Walter Becker and Donald Fagen published a mock "letter of intervention" about Anderson's creative "malaise." They presented Anderson with their soundtrack services, including lyrics for the title tune, while professing to be admirers of "World Cinema" and him in particular. Although it echoed The Royal Tennenbaums' more serious tone, Darjeeling Limited, about three emotionally separated brothers traveling together on a train in India, received comparable criticism to The Life Aquatic.
