He followed a career in computer science research after graduating. From 1991 to 1994, Vogels worked as a senior researcher at INESC in Porto, Portugal. In EC projects like Delta-4, he collaborated with Professors Paulo Verissimo and Luis Rodriguez on distributed systems support for factory floor automation. In 1994, he was asked to serve as a visiting scientist in Cornell University's department of computer science. Vogels worked as a research scientist at Cornell University's computer science department from 1994 to 2004. He focused his research mostly on scalable, dependable corporate systems. He has written several publications for conferences and journals, most of which focus on distributed systems technology for business computer systems. In 1997, he and Robbert van Renesse co-founded Reliable Network Solutions, Inc. as a business. The business had US patents for multicast protocols and resource monitoring of computer networks. He served as the company's vice president and chief technology officer from 1999 to 2002. He started working with Amazon as the director of systems research in September 2004. In January 2005, he was designated chief technology officer, and in March of that same year, he was made vice president.
