About Walter Mosley
Walter Mosley Biography
Walter Mosley is a famous author whose works focus on the experiences of black men in America. He views the absence of complex and fully formed black male characters in contemporary literature as a problem. He strives to correct it in his own writing. Mosley's novels showcase dignified and insightful characters who face the challenges of being black and male in America while trying to achieve a fulfilling life. With his use of elegant and concise language, Mosley has created memorable characters such as the flawed private investigator Easy Rawlins, the urban philosopher Socrates Fortlow, the army veteran Fearless Jones, the introverted bookstore owner Paris Minton, and the violent childhood friend Raymond "Mouse" Alexander. Mosley's first Rawlins novel, "Devil in a Blue Dress," was adapted into a movie starring Denzel Washington. Mosley is recognized for his contributions to the black community and its ongoing quest for racial equality. Through his essays, nonfiction works, and novels, he examines the potential of the African-American perspective to bring about political, economic, and social progress in America. Mosley's works include "RL's Dream," a blues novel, and his science-fiction novels "Blue Light" and "Futureland." He has also written several other novels, including "Fear Itself," "The Man in my Basement," and "47," his first book for young adults. Mosley's short fiction has been published in various magazines and has earned him recognition, including an O'Henry Award for a story in "Mas Outnumbered, Mas Outgunned." The book was later adapted into an HBO film starring Laurence Fishburne. Mosley is also a prominent voice in the literary community and has served on the boards of The Poetry Society of America and TransAfrica. He was the first African-American to sit on the National Book Foundation's board of directors and received several awards, including a Grammy for the liner notes of Richard Pryor's "And It's Deep Too! The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings" and a PEN USA Lifetime Achievement Award.
