Walt Bettinger Biography

Since October 2008, Walter W. Bettinger II has served as president and CEO of The Charles Schwab Corporation. Concurrent with his nomination, he was appointed to The Charles Schwab Corporation's Board of Directors. Bettinger also serves on the boards of Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. and Charles Schwab Bank, as well as the Board of Trustees for the Schwab managed mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. He was most recently president and chief operating officer of The Charles Schwab Corporation before taking on his present position. He is in charge of a team of over 16,000 full-time employees, with headquarters in San Francisco and branch offices in more than 335 cities across the United States, as well as London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Puerto Rico. Schwab is the largest publicly traded investment services firm in the United States and one of the world's largest financial services firms, with approximately $2.90 trillion in client assets, over 10 million active brokerage accounts, 1.1 million bank accounts, 1.5 million retirement plan participants, and over 7,000 independent investment advisors. Bettinger's responsibilities include managing the development of strategies and services that enable millions of consumers across the world save and invest "personally, with the assistance of an independent investment advisor, or through a company-sponsored retirement or benefit plan." He is recognized with navigating the financial crisis for Schwab. From 2009 to 2012, Schwab expanded client assets by $530 billion, which was $200 billion higher than the growth of all four of Schwab's top publicly traded competitors combined. From January 1, 2009 to the present, the value of Schwab stock has roughly quadrupled under his leadership. Bettinger has been recognized as a financial services leader throughout his career. Recent honors include Fortune magazine's "Businessperson of the Year" ranking of #19 in 2014 and #25 in 2016; Smart Money magazine's Power 30 listing of the world's most powerful and influential players in 2010; and Plan Sponsor magazine's lifetime achievement award for contributions to working Americans' retirement security in 2009. Bettinger created The Hampton Company, a supplier of retirement plan services to firms and their workers, at the age of 22 in 1983. Hampton was purchased by the Charles Schwab Corporation in 1995. Bettinger is involved in a variety of humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors in addition to his professional responsibilities. The Walt & Teri Bettinger Foundation was founded by him and his wife, Teri. Bettinger attended Delta State University in Cleveland, MS, and has a master of business administration degree with a major in finance from Ohio University, summa cum laude. He has also finished the Harvard Business School's General Management program.
