V.J. Smith has been a professional speaker for over ten years. In addition, he is a published author. Smith has also worked as a bill collector, a sun collector sales person, and a pledge collector. As a child of the mid-1970s, he says it took him a while to figure out what he wanted to accomplish with his life. He admits his speaking ability as a result of growing up with three siblings and four sisters. Smith observes that you had to figure how how to talk boisterously and quickly or you wouldn't get anything to eat. Smith infuses his remarks with anecdotes and personal stories from his own experiences to highlight critical points. He feels he is better suited to be a narrator rather than a preacher. Smith improved his public speaking skills by joining Toastmasters International. He was a finalist in that organization's World Championship of Public Speaking on two occasions. South Dakota State University graduate from 1978 Smith spent the 1980s working at the Allied Signal Aerospace Company in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1990, he returned to his alma mater to fill in as Assistant Athletic Director for the SDSU athletic department. He was appointed Executive Director of the SDSU Alumni Association in 1996 and departed that post in January 2007 due to the overwhelming demand for speaking engagements."
