Vineet Nayar Biography

Vineet Nayar is the founder of the Sampark Foundation and the former CEO of HCL Technologies. He is also the author of the best-selling management book Employees First, Customers Second: Turning Conventional Management On Its Head (Harvard Business Press, June 2010). Nayar is a management visionary and a radical thinker who oversaw HCLT's transition from a $0.7 billion firm in 2005 to a $4.7 billion global technology services organization with over 85,000 workers in 32 countries in 2013. This radical transformation led FORTUNE to recognize HCL as the world's most modern management, and BusinessWeek to name HCLT as one of the world's most influential companies, resulting in HCL's innovative management practices being taught as a case study at both Harvard Business School and London Business School. After receiving his MBA from XLRI, Nayar joined HCL in 1985. He started Comnet in 1993 and helped it develop to become a $1.4 billion dominating leader in technology management services. Nayar joined HCL Technologies as president in 2005 and served as CEO from 2007 until January 2013. During these years, he led a remarkable turnaround of the company, which saw its revenues and market cap grow by six times while also winning awards for the Most Democratic Workplace in the World, Workforce Management Optimas Award for HR Innovation in the United States, Britain's Top Employers, Best Employer in Asia, and many more. He is now the company's vice chairman. Nayar was also recently named to FORTUNE magazine's first-ever worldwide Executive Dream Team 2012, which has been defined as an all-star leadership team capable of uniting and dominating in any business. In addition, he was named to the prestigious Thinkers 50 2011/12 Selection, a comprehensive list of the world's top 50 business thinkers. His views on organizational change have garnered high recognition from luminaries such as the late C.K. Prahalad, Tom Peters, Gary Hamel, and Ram Charan, and his book Employees First, Customers Second has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide. Nayar has served as governor of ICT, a member of the Global Advisory Board of Women Leaders and Gender Parity Program, and a community partner of the World Economic Forum's Forum of Young Global Leaders. Nayar has also recently served as a Mentor (co-chair) of the World Economic Forums 2011 Annual Meeting of New Champions Conference and is now a member of the INSEAD and Human Capital Institute Global Talent Competitiveness Index Advisory Board.
