Vince Papale Biography

Vince Papale is a retired American football player. He spent three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League after spending two seasons with the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League. Invincible, a 2006 film, was inspired by Papale. Vince Papale began his professional football career with the Aston Green Knights of the semi-pro Seaboard Football League. When Papale tested out for the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League as a wide receiver, he was a teacher at Interboro High School and was coaching the junior varsity football team. Papale caught nine receptions for 121 yards in his debut season with the Bell, averaging 13.4 yards per grab. Papale only caught one ball in 1975, but it was a 49-yard touchdown. Papale was a special teams star in each of his seasons with the organization. His accomplishment with that club gained him a meeting with Philadelphia Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil in 1976, when general manager Jim Murray secured an invitation to Coach Vermeil's private workout. Papale finally made the squad, becoming the oldest rookie in NFL history to play without collegiate football experience at the age of 30. (other than kickers). From 1976 to 1978, he was a wide receiver and special teams player with the Eagles. During that period, he appeared in 41 of 44 regular season games (14 in 1976-1977 and 16 in 1978), recording two fumble recoveries and one 15-yard reception. In 1978, he was elected Special Teams Captain by his teammates and named "Man of the Year" by the Eagles for his numerous charity initiatives. In 1979, a shoulder injury terminated his career. After leaving the NFL, he spent eight years as a TV and radio commentator before becoming a commercial mortgage banker. After being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2001, Papale recovered to become a spokeswoman pushing others to undergo regular check-ups.
