Victor Davis Hanson Biography

Victor Davis Hanson is an emeritus professor of classics at California State University, Fresno, and a nationally syndicated columnist for Tribune Media Services. He is also the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow in Residence in Classics and Military History at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. Additionally, he has the title of Wayne & Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College, where he teaches military history and classical culture courses each fall semester. Hanson received the Claremont Institute's Statesmanship Award (2006), the National Humanities Medal (2007), the Bradley Prize (2008), the William F. Buckley Prize (2015), and the Eric Breindel Award for opinion journalism (2002). After working as a full-time orchard and grape producer from 1980 to 1984, Hanson joined the adjacent CSU Fresno campus in 1984 to start a classical languages department. He was the sixth generation to reside in the same house on his family's farm. He received the American Philological Association Excellence in Teaching Award in 1991, which is granted each year to the nation's finest undergraduate Greek and Latin instructors. Hanson has held positions such as Alexander Onassis Fellow (2001), visiting professor of classics at Stanford University (1991–1992), and National Endowment for the Humanities fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, California. He was also named alumnus of the year by the University of California, Santa Cruz (2002). He presently sits on the Bradley Foundation Board of Directors and formerly served as a presidential appointee to the American Battle Monuments Commission (2007-8). He was also a board member of the H. F. Guggenheim Foundation. Additionally, he was the U.S. Naval Academy's visiting Shifrin Professor of Military History in Annapolis, Maryland (2002-3). He was awarded the Wriston Lectureship by the Manhattan Institute in 2004 and the Nimitz Lectureship in Military History at UC Berkeley in 2006. In addition, he held the position of visiting William Simon Professor at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Public Policy from 2009 to 2011, 12, and 13–14. He also got an honorary doctorate of law from Pepperdine Law School. Hanson has written hundreds of articles, book reviews, academic papers, and newspaper editorials on a variety of subjects, including modern culture, global affairs, and agricultural and military history.
