Victor Cha Biography

Victor Cha formerly served as the National Security Council's director for Asian affairs, where he advised the President from 2004 to 2007. During his time at the White House, Cha received two Outstanding Service Commendations. He is also the prize-winning author of Alignment Despite Antagonism and Beyond the Final Score: The Politics of Sport in Asia. Among other periodicals, his writing has appeared in Foreign Affairs, International Security, and Political Science Quarterly. He has given interviews on several major news programs as a North Korea expert, including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox, and PBS News. He has also published articles on the subject for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today. Currently, Cha serves as a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., and holds the D.S. Song Chair in Government at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. His publications include Nuclear North Korea (Columbia, 2003), written with David Kang, Alignment Despite Antagonism: US-Japan-Korea Security (Stanford, 1999), and Beyond the Final Score: Politics of Sport in Asia (Columbia, 2009). His next works include North Korea: The Impossible State and Powerplay: Origins of the American Alliance System in Asia (both from Princeton). He is one of the coeditors of Columbia University Press's brand-new Contemporary Asia Series. He is a member of the editorial boards of various academic publications, and he just joined the Center for a New American Security Board of Advisors. Dr. Cha also frequently contributes to and serves as a guest commentator for a number of media organizations, including CNN, NPR, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, Asahi Shimbun, and the Japan Times. Dr. Cha has a B.A., M.I.A., Ph.D., and an M.A. from Oxford University in addition to his Columbia University degrees.
