Some of Vicki's best friends when she was growing up in the Californian San Francisco Bay area were books. Vicki asked God if she should enlist in the Navy in one of her very first prayers. She sensed He responded to her by writing, as she had always believed she was compelled to do. Vicki decided to study journalism at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo instead of continuing her longing for Annapolis. She spent a year studying abroad in Florence, Italy, where she continued to love movement and pasta, while she completed her degree. She met and married her soulmate Mark Kuyper soon after arriving in the United States.
