American social entrepreneur Veronika Scott is the CEO and creator of the charitable organization The Empowerment Plan, which is situated in Detroit. Scott was born in Orange, California, on June 27, 1990, but grew up in Huntington Woods, Michigan, a community south of Detroit. Her younger siblings are two. She graduated from Clarkston High School and continued her education at Detroit's College for Creative Studies, where she majored in industrial design. While she was at school, Scott resided with her grandparents. She received a degree in product design at CCS in December 2011. Veronika worked as a design intern at The Little Tikes Company (2009–2010) and ECCO design throughout college (2010). In the fall of 2010, Scott went out to the Detroit homeless population in response to a class assignment sponsored by Project H to create something to address a social need. She made a heat-trapping garment that converts into a cozy, weather-resistant sleeping bag after spending five months closely collaborating with the people at a nearby homeless shelter. After the semester, Scott continued to collaborate with the homeless community to develop further prototypes and enhance the jacket's functionality and aesthetic appeal. During one of her trips to the shelter, a woman approached Veronika and said, "We don't need coats. Jobs are required. Scott then hired and trained moms who were homeless to create the jackets.
