Webb relocated to New York City after finishing secondary school to consider enrolling at the Parsons School of Design. She supported herself by working in a Soho shop where professionals in the design industry discovered her and suggested she try displaying. In 1984, Webb appeared in a picture shoot for Mademoiselle magazine; shortly after, she found success in Europe as a catwalk model for fashion heavyweights like Lagerfeld and Chanel. Two years later, Webb had grown weary of the upsetting Parisian fashion world and had returned to New York, where she had made a mark with the Ford office. Webb also started writing style-related essays for the Manhattan magazine Paper, believing that believing in her race would prevent her from reaching the pinnacle of exhibiting success. Over time, she expanded her themes to address modern challenges like AIDS testing and early birthright. As soon as Webb began a regular monthly segment for Paper in 1990, Elle and Interview began receiving assignments. She had an on-screen appearance in Spike Lee's movie Jungle Fever the following year. She also appeared in Lee's Malcolm X later on.
