About Valarie Kaur
Valarie Kaur Biography
A leader in Sikh American justice, Valarie Kaur is a civil rights activist, lawyer, award-winning filmmaker, media analyst, educator, businesswoman, and author. Her most recent endeavor, the University of Southern California's Revolutionary Love Project, promotes the value of love in a time of fury. For fifteen years, Kaur has produced films that have won awards and directed national human rights campaigns. Her advocacy is centered on issues like Internet freedom, gun control, immigration, solitary confinement, LGBTQI equality, hate crimes, racism, and profiling. She is the creator of the Groundswell Movement, the biggest multifaith online organizing network in the United States with more than 300,000 members, which is credited with "dynamism bolstering faith-based activism in the 21st century." She also established the Yale Visual Law Project, where she taught Yale Law School students how to create films that influence public policy. Kaur most recently held the position of Media and Justice Fellow at the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, where she also co-founded Faithful Internet to support religious leaders in the struggle for Internet freedom. In her current roles as Senior Fellow at Auburn Theological Seminary and Scholar-in-Residence at Middle Collegiate Church, she speaks on #RevolutionaryLove as a public ethic—a political and moral reaction to injustice and a source for social action. Kaur has contributed her views to CNN, NPR, PBS, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Hill, and The New York Times as well as MSNBC on a regular basis. She has spoken before crowds at the Pentagon, the United Nations, the Parliament of the World's Religions, and more than 250 colleges and universities in the United States. She has also toured Burma as a keynote speaker for the U.S. State Department to support the country's transition from a dictatorship to a democracy. She co-founded the Together Tour in 2016, and she served as its keynote speaker in six American cities. Divided We Fall, Kaur's debut movie with Sharat Raju as its director, shown in 200 U.S. locations, garnered a dozen international honors and established itself as the standard reference work on post-9/11 hate crimes. In the 2008 and 2016 election cycles, conversations were sparked by the Divided We Fall campaign on more than 100 campuses and in local communities. Since then, Kaur and Raju have continued to collaborate on social justice-related documentaries: A short film called Alienation depicts families caught up in immigration sweeps; The Worst of the Worst: Portrait of a Supermax, a documentary on the use of solitary confinement, which helped win policy change in Connecticut and is now used by activists across the country, and Oak Creek: In Memorium, a viral short film about the 2012 mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, which helped the Sikh community win historic federal policy change on hate crimes. Stigma is a documentary about young people's experiences with stop-and-frisks. In order to assist entertainment and social justice initiatives, Kaur and Raju founded Seva Productions in 2016.
