Tyne Daly Biography

American actress Ellen Tyne Daly performs in both theatre and television. She was inducted into the 2011 American Theatre Hall of Fame and has received a Tony Award for her television work in addition to six Emmy Awards. Daly made her Broadway debut in the play That Summer - That Fall in 1967 when she started her theatrical career in summer stock in New York. She won four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Detective Mary Beth Lacey in the television series Cagney & Lacey (1982–1988), for which she is perhaps best remembered. She played the lead role in the Gypsy Broadway revival in 1989, and in 1990 she took home the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Her other television performances include Maxine Gray in Judging Amy (1999-2005), for which she won the sixth Emmy in 2003, and Alice Henderson in Christy (1994-95), for which she received an Emmy in 1996. Her previous Broadway performances include The Seagull (1992), Rabbit Hole (2006), and Mothers and Sons (2007), all of which received Tony nominations (2014). In the play Master Class, she also performed as Maria Callas on Broadway and in London's West End (2011-2012).
