Trevante Rhodes received a track and field sports scholarship to the University of Texas in Austin prior to becoming an actor. From 2008 until 2012, Rhodes was a sprinter for the Texas Longhorns.

In the 4100-meter relay at the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, Rhodes helped the American team win the gold medal. Rhodes relocated to Los Angeles after receiving his degree and started acting right away.
