Steyer is the co-founder of One California Bank, which later merged to establish Beneficial State Bank, an Oakland-based community development bank. He is also the founder and former co-senior managing partner of Farallon Capital. For institutions and wealthy people, Farallon Funds manages $20 billion in the capital. Institutional investors in the company include foundations and endowments for universities. From 2007 until 2017, Steyer was a member of the Stanford University board of trustees. He has been a partner and member of the executive committee of Hellman & Friedman, a private equity firm with headquarters in San Francisco, since 1986. Steyer and his wife committed to giving away half of their wealth to charity over their lifetimes when they joined The Giving Pledge in 2010. He sold his shares in Farallon Capital in 2012 and left the company. He started NextGen America, a group that supports liberal views on climate change, immigration, health care, and education, after shifting his attention to politics and the environment. Steyer said on July 9, 2019, in an online campaign film shared on Twitter, that he will run for the Democratic nomination for president after earlier saying he would not.
