Tom Staggs Biography

The Walt Disney Company's Chief Operating Officer and Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is Thomas O. Staggs. As Chairman of Parks and Resorts, he is responsible for the strategy, administration, and creative growth of the company's renowned travel and leisure division. He shares leadership of the company's business segment leaders with Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger in his capacity as Chief Operating Officer. In February 2015, Mr. Staggs was appointed chief operating officer. More than 130,000 cast members, crew members, and Imagineers worldwide have worked under his leadership at Parks and Resorts since 2010, and the division has achieved record levels of attendance, revenue, and profit. During Tom's tenure, Disney has launched two new cruise ships, opened Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawai'i, added three new lands at Hong Kong Disneyland, doubled the size of Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom, and finished a multi-year expansion of the Disneyland Resort with the addition of Cars Land and Buena Vista Street at Disney Calif. In addition, Tom has been in charge of overseeing the development of Shanghai Disney Resort and a new Avatar-themed land Prior to that, Mr. Staggs worked for The Walt Disney Company as senior executive vice president and chief financial officer. He was essential to the successful implementation of the purchases of Marvel Entertainment, Pixar Animation Studios, and Capital Cities/ABC. He led the effort to realign Disney's performance goals toward a mix of profit growth, solid long-term capital returns, and free cash flow during his twelve years as CFO. Wall Street has commended him for his financial and interpersonal abilities, and Institutional Investor magazine has continuously ranked him as the top CFO in the entertainment sector. In 1990, Mr. Staggs started working at Disney as the manager of strategic planning. He swiftly moved up through a number of jobs with increasing responsibilities, eventually earning the post of chief financial officer in 1998. He worked in investment banking at Morgan Stanley & Co. before joining Disney. The Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota awarded Mr. Staggs a business bachelor's degree, and the Stanford Graduate School of Business awarded him an MBA.
