Tom aspired to become a stand-up comic. He first heard stand-up comedy on Bill Cosby's debut album, which featured the well-known Noah skit. He repeatedly listened to Carlin's FM and AM records until he knew every word by heart. He used to read the whole record aloud to anyone who would listen.

At age 26, he quit his insurance position in Philadelphia to relocate to Florida, where he was hired by a nearby golf course. The position barely lasted three weeks. Ryan claims that being forced to consider my life goals after losing that job was the finest thing that has ever happened to him.
