Todd Gitlin Biography

Since the 1960s, Todd Gitlin has been active in American politics and culture as both an activist and a critic. He has written on topics as diverse as community involvement, journalism, television, and our society as a whole. A seminal work in media sociology is his book The Whole World is Watching: Mass Media in the Making and Unmaking of the New Left. Gitlin has continued to write extensively on a variety of topics related to journalism and the media, as seen in publications like Inside Prime Time and Media Unlimited. Many college courses utilize his history, The Sixties: Years of Hope Days of Rage. In addition, his writings on patriotism, war, and anti-Americanism in the wake of September 11 were extensively read and cited. In The Twilight of Common Dreams: Why America is Wracked by Culture Wars and in numerous other works on the meaning of our media-saturated existence, he examines current issues affecting American culture and the cultural sector. Gitlin arrived at Columbia University in the fall of 2002 and was appointed Professor of Journalism and Sociology after spending many years on the faculties of the University of California Berkeley and New York University. He graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in mathematics and from UC Berkeley with a Ph.D. in sociology. Gitlin was recently a fellow at the Media Studies Center in New York from 1998 to 1999. He has received several distinctions and awards.
