In addition to practicing palliative medicine on the sickest and most vulnerable patients, Dr. Timothy Ihrig also works with other healthcare professionals to raise the standard and effectiveness of the treatment they offer to this group. His research has demonstrated how patient-centered treatment increases life quality and duration and has major financial advantages for both the economy and healthcare systems. Ihrig is well-known across the country for his knowledge of community-based palliative care and continuum population health. He serves as a content expert for the Accountable Care Learning Collaborative, a preeminent healthcare innovation collaborative co-chaired by Dr. Mark McClellan, a former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, and Mike Leavitt, a former secretary of health and human services and governor of Utah. Ihrig is a member of the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative's Advisory Council, a think tank on policies relating to healthcare quality, safety, and value for the state of Iowa. He also represents the American Medical Association as an alternate delegate from Iowa. Ihrig was the only practicing doctor who helped the Iowa General Assembly raise the minimum standard requirements for Iowa physicians with respect to end-of-life care and oversight of prescriptive narcotics. He has served as an expert source for the Brookings Institution's development of palliative care. He also supported the Iowa Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment bill as a leading clinician. He serves as a clinical teacher for palliative care and is a clinical adjunct professor in the department of medicine at the University of Iowa Carver School of Medicine. He is on the board of the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Iowa and is a member of the Palliative Care Advisory Committee. He was previously the head of the advocacy committee.
