Tim Tharp Biography

Tim Tharp was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma, a little community in the state's eastern region. At the age of seven, his father relocated to Midwest Metropolitan, an Oklahoma City suburb, after accepting a position as assistant editor of a major city newspaper. He developed the comic strips Bush Miller, which chronicles the continued adventures of a foolish bush-league baseball player, and Monster Mag while still in elementary school. He developed a passion for fiction writing in fifth grade and pledged to one day become a writer in addition to being the best professional football player in history. His desire to play professional sports had diminished by the time he was in high school, but he still enjoyed playing football on Sundays on the YMCA's lawn. But he still had a soft spot in his heart for writing. He served as the newspaper's editor and contributed a regular column as well as a mystery novella titled Nehi Bolt after the main character, a tough and intelligent small-town sheriff from Oklahoma. He started writing short tales inspired by his favorite authors of the period, Kurt Vonnegut, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, and Charles Dickens, in addition to writing for the school newspaper. After high school, he enrolled at Oklahoma State University, the alma mater of his father, concentrating initially on journalism before switching to psychology. After two years, he was drawn to the open road by his need for adventure. He first hitchhiked to Chicago to see a buddy before continuing on to California and then returning to Oklahoma. He then left for Florida in an old and worn-out pickup vehicle with a college mate, still hungry for new experiences. The two were unable to find employment in Miami, so they obtained housing and each made $300 by participating in an aspirin alternative research being conducted by a testing laboratory. This was more than enough cash to pay for the trip back to Oklahoma.
