About Tim Smit
Tim Smit Biography
On September 25, 1954, Sir Tim Smit KBE was born in Holland. At Durham University, he studied anthropology and archaeology. Tim spent fifteen years working as a composer and producer in both rock and opera. Tim is the Executive Vice-Chair and Co-Founder of the prestigious Eden Project in Cornwall, which is located close to St Austell. More than 19 million people have visited Eden since it first opened its doors to the public in 2000. What was once a barren hole has been transformed into a cradle of life with top-notch horticulture and astounding architecture that is a symbol of human achievement. Eden began as a dream in 1995. The Cornish economy has benefited from Eden's nearly £1.9 billion contribution. By interpreting and communicating scientific concepts through the use of art drama and storytelling, Eden is proud of its success in changing people's perceptions of the potential for and the applications of science. Eden also prides itself on upholding its mission to play a key role in local regeneration. It establishes unequivocally that sustainability is about excellent business practices and the civic ideals of the future, not sandals and nut cutlets. Tim serves as a trustee patron and board member for several statutory and nonprofit organizations on both a local and a national level. He has won several national honors, such as the Royal Society of Arts Albert Medal (2003). He received an Honorary CBE in the New Year's Honours List in 2002, and Her Majesty the Queen knighted him in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) in June 2012. Numerous Universities have awarded him honorary doctorates and fellowships. Tim has been on several television and radio shows, including "This is Your Life" and "Desert Island Discs," and he has also been a guest on both shows. He frequently speaks at conferences, awards ceremonies, banquets, and other occasions. Tim is the author of books about the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan, which was named "Book of the Year" in 1997 by the Sunday Times. He has also written for publications on a wide range of topics. He spends his leisure time watching movies, listening to music, and creating art. He resides in Cornwall.
