Tim Porter-O'Grady Biography

For 48 years in Health care, Dr. Tim Porter-O’Grady has worked and grown from a staff nurse to senior executive in a variety of health care settings. At an international healthcare consulting firm in Atlanta which specializes in organizational innovation, conflict and change, health futures, as well as complex health service delivery models; Tim currently works there as a senior partner. He is well known for his work on clinical leadership, conflict, innovation, health futures, professional governance models and complex systems. He co-leads the implementation of the new Masters, PhD and DNP tracks in Health Innovation as Professor of Practice and leadership scholar at Arizona State University, College of Nursing and Health Innovation. At the Ohio State University College of Nursing in the DNP program, he was also Clinical Professor and Leadership Scholar. He is a clinical professor at Emory University, School Nursing, Atlanta, GA., and currently a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board. Dr. Porter-O’Grady earned two doctorates; one in organizational and systems leadership and a second in learning behavior and also holds graduate degrees in clinical leadership as well as a Doctor of Science degree, honoris causa, from the Medical University of Ohio. He is a board certified wound specialist and multi-board certified as a nurse executive; and advanced practitioner (APRN-CNS) in gerontology. Tim is a registered mediator and arbitrator certified by the Georgia Supreme Court’s Office of Dispute Resolution. He is a clinical Fellow in the American College of Clinical Wound Specialists and also a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. He can be found practicing his craft at the Mercy Care Street Medicine Program in Atlanta. Tim has written 26 books and over 200 professional journal articles in healthcare. He has also won the AJN Healthcare Book of the Year Award 9 times. He has tutored in over 1000 settings world-wide and consulted internationally with over 600 institutions. He has served in national and community boards such as governor with Sigma Theta Tau International, president of AID Atlanta, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation, the vice chair of the governing board of Catholic Health East, and Chair of the American Nurse’s Foundation as well as other professional associations. Tim has been honored with The Luther Christman Award by the American Nurses Association, he received the President’s Award from the American Academy of Nursing and also the Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Organization of Nurse Executives.
