Tim Lane Biography

Timothy Lane was named Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in February 2009. In this role, he is one of two deputy governors responsible for managing the Bank’s analysis and operations in fostering a stable and efficient financial system. He bears responsibility for decisions relating to monetary policy, the stability of the financial system, and determining the strategic direction of the Bank as a member of the Governing Council. As a Governor's Adviser, Mr. Lane joined the Bank of Canada in August 2008. Prior to that, he worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC, for 20 years. He had a range of jobs with a mix of management, analytical, and policy duties throughout that time and helped with the IMF's work on a number of nations. He has conducted research on a variety of subjects, such as financial crises, IMF reform, and economic change. Mr. Lane served as an Oliver Smithies Visiting Fellow of Balliol College at the University of Oxford during the academic year 2004–2005. In addition, he taught economics as an assistant professor at the University of Iowa and Michigan State University (1984–88). (1983-84). Mr. Lane was born in Ottawa and earned his BA (honors) from Carleton University in 1977 as well as his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Western Ontario in 1983.
