Tim Duryea Biography

After 14 seasons as a member of the coaching staff, Utah State men's basketball head coach Tim Duryea (pronounced Dur-yea) will begin his first season at the helm in 2015-16. Duryea was the longest-serving assistant coach in program history before taking over as the 18th head coach of USU men's basketball in April of 2015. Duryea has been a part of an Aggie program that has averaged 23.6 wins per season, advanced to the NCAA Tournament six times (2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011), won five conference championships in the Big West (2003) and Western Athletic Conferences (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), and won four conference tournament titles in his 14 years at Utah State. Duryea was in charge of an Aggie offense that has typically been one of the best in the country for the seven seasons coming up to his hiring as head coach. Utah State led the Mountain West and rated No. 14 nationally in 3-point shooting (.394), as well as second in the conference and No. 17 nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.38), and second in the conference and No. 19 nationally in fewest turnovers per game in the 2014-15 season (10.4). Redshirt freshman forward David Collette, who ranked No. 14 in the country with a 59.1 percent field goal percentage, was the greatest field goal shooter in the Mountain West (163-of-276). Duryea spent his first seven years at Utah State as the defensive coordinator for an Aggie defense that consistently rated among the nation's best in terms of points allowed, including No. 4 in 2002 (58.1), No. 8 in 2005 (57.8), and No. 9 in 2003. (60.0). During his career at Utah State, the Aggies have had twelve 20-win seasons, including a 30-5 season in 2008-09 and a 30-4 season in 2010-11, when they established a school record for victories. During the last 14 years, USU has had 18 players win 30 all-conference awards, including three WAC Players of the Year in Jaycee Carroll (2008), Gary Wilkinson (2009), and Tai Wesley (2011). With Duryea on staff, USU has had three players win All-American honors a total of four times: Carroll (2007, 2008), Wilkinson (2009), and Wesley (2010). (2011). Duryea has supervised academic success at Utah State, which has resulted in 22 Aggies garnering academic all-conference accolades a total of 40 times over the previous 14 years, while approximately 90% of USU's players have graduated during the same period. Duryea was the head coach at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College from 2000 to 2001 before joining the Aggies. His teams went 40-25 in his two years as head coach, with back-to-back appearances to the Region Six Championships. Duryea, a 1988 North Texas alumnus, began his coaching career at Colorado State in 1988 before coming to North Texas in 1993. Duryea then spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College before taking over as head coach ahead of the 1999-2000 season. Duryea attended Denton High School and Texas Pan-American University before transferring to North Texas. Duryea was a co-captain for one of just three teams in UNT history to reach the NCAA Tournament in 1988. Duryea and his wife Angie have a 13-year-old daughter and 20-year-old twins, Tanner and Taylor (Kaylee). Tanner plays lacrosse for Westminster (Utah) as a sophomore, while Taylor plays volleyball for Dixie State as a sophomore (Utah).
