Thornton was born in the Texas town of College Station. She made her television acting debut in the Fox comedy Quintuplets' pilot episode. She went on to star in films such as 8 Simple Rules, American Dreams, The O.C., Desperate Housewives, That's So Raven, Jericho, Wizards of Waverly Place, and Hannah Montana. She first appeared as Tawni Hart on the Disney Channel Original Series Sonny with a Chance in 2009, and then in the Disney Channel Original Movie Hatching Pete in 2010. Sonny With a Chance concluded on January 2, 2011, and was replaced by So Random!, which debuted on June 5, 2011, and starred Thornton. Thornton is a devout follower of Christ. Thornton and her partner, Christopher Carney, a court officer, were engaged in December 2009. On November 12, 2011, the pair married in Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas. Thornton revealed her pregnancy with their first child on February 13, 2012. Kenneth James Carney, the couple's son, was born on August 14, 2012. Cassie Scerbo, an actress, is the child's godmother.
