American hip hop trio Three 6 Mafia is based in Memphis, Tennessee, and is signed to Columbia Records. In 1991, DJ Paul Lord Infamous and Juicy J founded the group, which was first known as Triple 6 Mafia. Prior to being known as Triple 6 Mafia, the group was known as Backyard Posse, and it frequently collaborated with members of the Prophet Posse and the Gimisum Family. In 1994, Koopsta Knicca joined the crew. In 1995, Crunchy Black joined the group as a dancer, and after the debut album Mystic Stylez was released, Gangsta Boo was given full membership. The trio established Prophet Entertainment, a record company, which they later gave up ownership of, to release their debut album Mystic Stylez. Their music has evolved from the initially frightening, dark sounds and grimy lyrics to a less threatening sound. The group has had multiple lineup changes as well, and as a result of contractual issues, they currently go by the moniker Da Mafia 6ix when performing. Their two platinum-selling albums are as follows: When the Smoke Clears: Sixty Six Sixty One and Most Known Unknown both included their well-known song Stay Fly, which is credited with launching their climb to fame and popularity. The trio has sold 5.5 million albums globally. At the 78th Academy Awards in 2006, the group's song It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp from the film Hustle & Flow took home the Best Original Song Academy Award. Described as gangster rap and horrorcore crunk, Three 6 Mafia plays music.
