Thomas Sanderson Biography

Thomas M. Sanderson is a consultant, as well as the CSIS Transnational Threats Project's deputy director and senior fellow. Terrorism, long-term global risks and trends, US national security policy, intelligence and information sharing, Central Asia, and China are all topics that he works on. He has performed fieldwork in 50 countries over the course of his 12 years of counterterrorism expertise, engaging a wide range of sources including terrorists, extremists, rebels, foreign intelligence agents, nonprofit organization leaders, and academics. He was the director of the CSIS open-source counterterrorism project from 2004 to 2009, where he designed and directed two large studies on threats in Europe and Southeast Asia. Sanderson has written 10 significant studies for CSIS, as well as pieces for The Economist, The New York Times, The Washington Post, the West Point CTC Sentinel, and the Harvard Asia-Pacific Review. He also works for the US government and the commercial sector as a course instructor and consultant. In 2005, he completed a fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin, where he researched counterterrorism cooperation and threat perception between the United States and Germany. Mr. Sanderson worked as an analyst for Science Applications International Corporation before joining CSIS, where he performed significant terrorist organization assessments for the US Defense Intelligence Agency. He previously held a Henry L. Stimson Center Fellowship in Shanghai, China, in 2001, where he studied the Chinese perspective on US ballistic missile defense; he also has four years of NGO development experience in Central Asia and Russia. Sanderson graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts with a B.A. and the Fletcher School at Tufts University with an M.A. in law and diplomacy.
