Thomas Levy Biography

At the University of California, San Diego, Thomas Evan Levy holds the Norma Kershaw Chair in the Archaeology of Ancient Israel and Neighboring Lands and is a distinguished professor. He is an employee at the California Center of Telecommunications and Information Technology's Department of Anthropology and Judaic Studies Program and Associate Director of the Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture, and Archaeology (CISA3). Along with his students and coworkers, Levy does research in cyber-archaeology. Levy, a Levantine field archaeologist who was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is interested in the impact of technology, particularly early mining and metallurgy, on social evolution from the beginnings of sedentism and the domestication of plants and animals in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period (around 7500 BCE) to the rise of the first historic Levantine state-level societies in the Iron Age (ca. 1200 500 BCE). The National Geographic Society, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, and other organizations have financed a number of Levy's multidisciplinary archaeological field projects in Israel and Jordan. In India, Tom also carries out the ethnoarchaeological study. The Sthapathy brothers, who are renowned artisans from the Swamimalai hamlet, and Levy, his wife Alina Levy, are co-authors of the book Masters of Fire - Hereditary Bronze Casters of South India.
