Thomas Davenport Biography
Tom is a well-known thought leader who has assisted thousands of businesses all over the world in reviving their management processes. As the President's Distinguished Professor in Management and Information Technology at Babson College and as a Visiting Professor at the Harvard Business School for the 2012–2013 academic year, he blends his interests in business, research, and academia. He is also a Senior Advisor to Deloitte Analytics and the co-founder and research director of the International Institute for Analytics. In addition to multiple firsts in the fields of big data and analytics, business process reengineering, knowledge management, and the commercial use of enterprise technologies, Tom has published or coauthored fourteen books. One of the ten must-read articles in the 90-year history of the Harvard Business Review is still his concept of big data and analytics as a competitive differentiator, which was first presented in the HBR article Competing on Analytics. HBR editors have named it one of the most significant management ideas of the last ten years. His work in this area is credited with inspiring a new type of organization, along with two highly regarded books, Analytics at Work: Smarter Decisions, Better Results and Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning, which CIO Magazine named one of the all-time Top 15 Most Groundbreaking Management Books. Judgment Calls: Twelve Stories of Big Decisions and the Teams that Got Them Right is his most recent book. It was just chosen by Publishers Weekly as one of the top ten business books of 2012. He is presently writing a new book on analytical reasoning that may perhaps be called Numbers Talk. He has written hundreds of articles, essays, and blogs for magazines including The Financial Times, CIO, Harvard Business Review, and MIT Sloan Management Review. He is regularly mentioned in newspapers like The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. He has also overseen research labs at Accenture, McKinsey & Company, Ernst & Young, and CSC. He is regarded as one of the top 25 consultants in the world and one of the 100 most important persons in the IT business. Tom has taught at the Harvard Business School, the University of Chicago, Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, and the University of Texas in Austin.
