Thomas D. Jones PhD Biography

Thomas D. Jones, Ph.D., is a former NASA astronaut, author, and pilot. He worked for NASA for more than eleven years and flew four space shuttle flights to Earth orbit. Dr. Jones oversaw three spacewalks on his final voyage to deploy the American Destiny laboratory, the International Space Station's focal point. He has been living and working in space for 53 days. After obtaining his doctorate in planetary sciences from the University of Arizona and graduating from the Air Force Academy, Jones flew B-52D strategic bombers, studied asteroids for NASA, designed intelligence-gathering systems for the CIA, and assisted NASA in creating cutting-edge mission concepts to explore the solar system. Jones is the author of many books about space and aviation, including Ask the Astronaut, Planetology, and Hell Hawks (co-authored with Ellen Stofan). The Secret History of the American Flyers Who Criticized the Wehrmacht of Hitler (with Robert F. Dorr) and Sky Walking: A Memoir by an Astronaut. One of the "Five Best" space-related books, according to The Wall Street Journal, is Sky Walking. The NASA Distinguished Service Medal, four NASA Space Flight Medals, the NASA Exceptional Service Award, the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal, the NASA Exceptional Public Service Award, Phi Beta Kappa, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the title of Distinguished Eagle Scout are among Dr. Jones' honors. In his honor, the Main Belt asteroid 1082 Tom Jones was named. Jones was admitted to the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2018.
