Thomas Collins Biography

Mr. Collins began his career as a copywriter for a direct-marketing advertising firm before holding positions as advertising manager at Simon & Schuster and vice president and copy chief at Wunderman (today Wunderman Cato Johnson) He and Stan Rapp founded Rapp & Collins, a full-service direct marketing firm, in 1965. Ten years later, Doyle Dane Bernbach purchased it, and today it is a member of the $1.5 billion global network of Rapp/Collins direct-marketing advertising firms that are controlled by parent company Omnicom. Mr. Collins left Rapp & Collins in 1986 to focus on his speaking, writing, and consulting after 20 years there as creative director and chairman of the plan's board. He contributed a column on the fundamentals of direct marketing advertising text to Direct Marketing Magazine for five years. In 1988, he was recognized as a "great American copywriter" on the magazine's front cover and in an inside cover story. For a lifetime of innovation and strategic thinking in direct marketing, he has won numerous honors, including the Irving Wunderman Award from the Direct Marketing Creative Guild, the Silver Apple Award from the Direct Marketing Club of New York, and the Philadelphia Direct Marketing Man of the Year Award. He and Stan Rapp shared the 1989 Direct Marketer of the Year award from the New York-based Direct Marketing Day. Together, Collins and Rapp have written four books, including Send 'Em One White Sock (1994), Beyond MaxiMarketing (1994), The Great Marketing Turnaround (1990), and MaxiMarketing (1986), which have sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide (1998).
