The Second City debuted on December 16, 1959, and got its name from A. J. Liebling's mocking description of Chicago in The New Yorker. Success came right away. For more than thirty years, The Second City has toured the globe with its distinctive sarcasm and humor. The Second City now runs three traveling troupes out of its Chicago theatre in addition to resident theatres in Chicago, Toronto, and Detroit. The Second City has grown into a North American theatrical institution and served as the foundation for many of the comic performers, writers, and directors who are currently active in American cinema, television, and theatre, although still a long way from becoming venerable. Both Chicago and Toronto now have developed training centers.
